Canton Georgia is part of Cherokee County. It is on the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The City of Canton was originally known as Cherokee Court House. In 1834, when it was incorporated, it was changed to Canton - named after a city in China because of its silk production. More than half the buildings in Canton were destroyed when Union General William T. Sherman ordered it to be burned down in the Union march through Georgia in 1864.
In 1870 the railroad came to Canton which brought major changes to the city. The railroad allowed manufacturers to ship cotton and marble produced in the area to other parts of the state.
Now Canton is known as a welcoming community with great schools, a low crime rate, beautiful parks, and some of the lowest taxes in the state.
