Memorial Day Plumbing Tips: Keep the Celebration Flowing
Memorial Day means different things to different people. For some, it’s backyard burgers and family time. For others, it’s a quiet moment of reflection for the people who never made it home. At My Georgia Plumber, we think it’s both—a day to honor the sacrifices made for our freedoms and to enjoy the life we get to live because of them.
If you’re hosting this weekend or heading out of town, here are a few simple ways to keep your plumbing in check so you can enjoy the holiday without calling in reinforcements.
1. Don’t Feed the Drain
Cookouts are the heart of Memorial Day, but all that grease and food waste? Not so great for your plumbing. It’s tempting to rinse pans or scrap plates into the sink, but that grease will harden fast—and it doesn’t take much to clog up a line. Let the grease cool, toss it in the trash, and save your pipes the headache.
2. Prepare for Bathroom Traffic
More guests means more flushes. If you’ve got folks coming over, do yourself a favor and make sure everything’s flushing as it should. Keep a plunger nearby, remind guests to stick to toilet paper only, and if your system’s been acting up lately, you may want to schedule an inspection before the crowd arrives.
3. Laundry Can Wait
After a long day outdoors, it’s easy to toss everything into the washer at once. But overloading your machine—especially older ones—can stress your plumbing system. Spread it out over a couple of days if you can. Your water lines (and your clothes) will thank you.
4. Headed Out of Town? Prep Before You Go
If you’re using the long weekend to sneak away for a few days, take a minute to prep your plumbing before you go. Shut off the main water supply to avoid any surprises while you’re gone, and if your water heater has a vacation setting, use it. It’ll save energy and reduce wear while you’re off the grid.
5. Give Outdoor Fixtures a Once-Over
Pool parties, slip-n-slides, and water balloon battles—Memorial Day tends to drag all the outdoor hoses into action. Take a quick look at your outdoor faucets, hose bibbs, and pool fill lines. Replace cracked washers or seals now instead of dealing with surprise leaks mid-party.
At My Georgia Plumber, we know holidays are for family, not faucet repairs. So if something does go sideways, or you’d rather get ahead of it before guests roll in, give us a call.
And from all of us here—thank you to the men and women who gave everything, and to the families who live with that loss every day. We’re able to enjoy the small stuff—hot dogs, yard games, and time off—because of the big sacrifices they made.
Stay safe. Celebrate smart. And as always, if your plumbing gives you trouble, we’re just a phone call away: 770-592-0081.
