If you’ve been thinking about redoing your bathroom, you’re not alone. A lot of folks take it on to fix old plumbing, update fixtures, or just make the space more comfortable. But once you start pulling things apart, you find out pretty quickly—there’s more to it than picking tile.

Over the years, My Georgia Plumber has helped homeowners with remodels big and small. Here’s a list of things we always tell people to think through before they get started.

1. Set a Budget That Covers More Than You Think

Start by figuring out what you want to spend, then add a cushion. Things come up. Maybe the subfloor’s not in great shape, or the plumbing behind the wall’s older than it looks. Price out your fixtures, finishes, and labor, and give yourself breathing room for surprises.

2. Think Through the Layout First

If you’re just replacing old with new in the same spots, things are simpler. But if you’re moving the shower or changing where the toilet sits, you’re going to need to reroute pipes, and that adds time and cost. Not saying don’t do it, just plan for it.

3. Pick Fixtures That Work—Not Just Ones That Look Good

It’s easy to get caught up in picking out sleek faucets and fancy showerheads, but looks aren’t everything. Go with stuff that holds up and is easy to maintain. If it helps save water or energy, even better. Always check warranty info too.

4. Now’s the Time to Check Your Plumbing

If your house is older and you’ve still got galvanized or polybutylene pipes, don’t skip this. When you’ve already got walls open, it’s the best time to swap old lines for something that’ll last. Ask My Georgia Plumber to check for corrosion, weak pressure, or out-of-date materials.

5. Flooring and Tile: Go for Tough and Safe

Bathrooms get wet—there’s no getting around that. You want floor tile that won’t get slick and wall tile that can stand up to steam and water without issue. And don’t forget proper grout and sealant. It might not be exciting, but it matters.

6. Good Lighting and Ventilation Make a Big Difference

Make sure you’ve got light where it matters—above the sink, in the shower, and anywhere someone’s getting ready. As for ventilation, don’t skimp. A quiet, solid exhaust fan will save your paint, your ceiling, and your air quality in the long run.

7. Don’t Forget the Small Stuff

It’s easy to get so focused on the big pieces that you forget the extras. Towel bars, mirrors, shelving, and even where outlets go—it all adds up to whether the room works day-to-day. Sketch it out and picture yourself using the space before you finish.

Get a Plumber Involved Early

I’ve seen jobs where folks wait until the end to call a plumber, and by then, they’ve boxed themselves into a corner—literally. A quick walkthrough early on can help catch issues before they turn into costly redos.

At My Georgia Plumber, we’re here to help with everything from moving water lines to updating fixtures. Whether you’re hiring a contractor or handling it yourself, we’ll make sure the plumbing side of things goes smoothly—and up to code.
